KUCHING: Sarawak’s international go-karter Freddy Lawan is eyeing a top three finish in the Rotax Max World Finals at Ghibli Raceway International, Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt from Dec 5-12.
He will be competing in the 125 Max DD2 category together with another Malaysian karter, Ooi Fei Hoong from Kuala Lumpur.
“This is a new challenge for me … the first time I’m competing in the DD2 category. It will be very tough as my machine with Tiptronic gear will be hard to manoeuvre,” he said yesterday.
However, he is confident of securing a good result after testing a Max DD2 kart.
“It’s anybody’s race but the competition will be fair … the organiser BRP-Rotax will provide the same machines to all racers. I’m looking forward to a good run,” he added.
Freddy said a few factors like driving skills and techniques, weather and luck could decide the outcome of a race.
“Sometimes, your machine just fails you … at other times, you bump into someone or someone bumps into you from the rear. So the best driver may not necessarily end up the champion,” he noted.
Freddy made history by becoming the first Sarawakian to represent Malaysia in the Rotax Max World Finals after winning the Asia Zone Max Challenge Championship in Kuala Lumpur in August.
A total of 216 racers (top three from each country) will be competing in three categories – 125 Max DD2, Max and Junior Max.
The race in Egypt will be Freddy’s last for the season and he would like to cap it with a good performance.
His most recent race was in the Red White Sangari Invitational International at Sepang International Karting Circuit on Nov 21 and 22.
He did not finish due to technical problems.
He will leave for Egypt today to beat a tight schedule with the practice next Wednesday and Thursday and the trial times next Friday.
The final will be on Sunday.
