Incessant rain normal —Jabu

KUCHING: There should not be
any unnecessary panic during
the north-east monsoon season
despite the incessant downpour.
Addressing the State Disaster
Relief Committee (JPBN) meeting
at the State Operations Room,
Wisma Bapa Malaysia here
yesterday, Deputy Chief Minister
Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred
Jabu said the continuous rain was
normal and was the cause of a rise
in average rainfall recorded in the
whole of December.
“However, based on information
f rom the Me t e orolog ic a l
Department Malaysia, four to
five episodes of heavy rain are
expected to happen during the
north-east monsoon.
“These episodes, which may
take three to seven days, may
cause fl ooding,” he said, adding
that the situation was expected to
last until March next year.
However, he stressed that there
was no reason to panic as rainfall
during the fi rst quarter of 2014 was
forecast to be average.
“This should not warrant
any unnecessary panic as the
committee and the relevant
agencies and organisations
involved in the fl ood operations
have increased their readiness
and manpower as precautions
against the possibility of fl ooding,”
Jabu, who is also JPBN chairman, said.
He added that they would be on
duty 24 hours a day if needed.
“This is not the first time we
would be prepared for such duties,
as we have done so similarly in
the past with emergencies like
the haze and any situation where
the rakyat (people) need our
help; we will do our best,” Jabu said.
