Solitary strike from Aris sets up Sunday final against Finexsys
KUCHING: Yayasan Sarawak staved off a spirited fight from Brooke Dockyard to win their semi-final match 1-0 at State Stadium in Petra Jaya yesterday.
The solitary goal came from Aris Chuchu in the 55th minute when he capitalised on a lack of concentration by Brooke Dockyard defenders to steal the ball and shoot it into the right corner of the net.
It was also a sweet victory for Yayasan as they lost 0-1 to Brooke Dockyard in the final of the Merdeka Cup tournament in August.
‘We are relieved and happy to reach the final and with this win, we have sort of gained our revenge for the loss to Brooke Dockyard in the Merdeka Cup final,” said Yayasan coach Nazarie Khusairy.
He will be seeking another revenge against Finexsys in the final this Sunday as Yayasan were beaten by Finexsys 3-0 in a Group B match on Dec 9.
A ten-man Finexsys sneaked into the final on Wednesday after they beat DBKU 1-0 in the semi-final.
Nazarie said his team could have won by a bigger margin if not for poor finishing.
“We could have gotten two or three goals in the first half where we were in control of the game but the finishing by our strikers was not up to mark,” he said.
“Good finishing is vital in any match so I have to ensure that my boys have that in the final against Finexsys,” he added.
He said that his players were under tremendous pressure in the last ten minutes but fortunately they were able to hold the fort well until the final whistle.
However, the win was marred by an injury to goalkeeper Abdul Ghani Anuar in the final minutes of the second half.
Asked whether Ghani would be available for Sunday’s final, Nazarie replied: “I’m not sure of that because we need to send him for a check-up to assess the seriousness of his injury.”
