MIRI: The International Triathlon Sarawak Miri 2009 will be held on November 28 and 29 as scheduled despite fears over the global swine flu outbreak.
Organising secretary Awang Hashim Awang Bujang, disclosed that this year, they had received entries from the affected nations and medical tests would be carried out on the participants.
“We hope the flu will not spread to Malaysia and we will work closely with Health Ministry to monitor the situation and the health of the participants,” he said yesterday.
He affirmed the triathlon would go ahead even though the world now is facing the swine flu.
“However, while Malaysia is not affected by the deadly influenza, we will remain vigilant to prevent the disease spreading here.
” Three hundred participants from 16 countries, including Malaysia, are expected to take part in the triathlon.
Among the countries are Great Britain, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, Canada and Brunei.
Winners of the various categories stand to win cash amounting to RM80,000.
Trophies, medals and certificates of participation will also be presented.
