KUCHING: Sarawak will use the 7th National Junior Wushu Championship in Malacca from June 2-4 as a testing ground for their new exponents ahead of the 2014 Sukma likely to be hosted by Sarawak.
Led by team manager Wong Hua Ying and China coach Ling Ung Hee, the 16- member state contingent will gear their performance towards that particular Sukma six years from now. At a flag presentation ceremony, Sarawak Wushu Lion and Dragon Dance Federation secretary James Ting said 60 per cent of the squad were new faces.
“Many states now are working hard to improve the standard of wushu by engaging coaches from China.
“We will use the championship to test our new exponents.
“Our focus this year is not mainly on winning because we need to expose new exponents after those from the previous year have become over-aged,” he said.
Ting added that Sarawak were dominant all these years, having won all the championships since 2002 except the one in Negeri Sembilan in 2007.
