KUALA TERENGGANU: Thailand continued their dominance in world sepak takraw after sweeping aside Indonesia 2-0 in the men’s team final of the World Sepak Takraw Championships at Stadium Negeri here yesterday while Vietnam emerged as a new dominant force in the women’s event.
It was Thailand’s second consecutive world title on Malaysian soil as the Thais had also won the title when Penang hosted the championships last year.
Thailand’s first regu, powered by Siriwat Sakha, Pattarapong Yupadel and Anuwat Chaichana easily swept aside Yudi Purnomo, Wisno Dwi and Suko Hartono 21-14, 21-9 for the first point.
The second Thai regu comprising Krisna Tanakorn, Kangsirod Sirisamudsan and Supachai Maneenat clinched the tie with another straight sets 21-15, 21-12 victory over Abrian, Samsul and Rizal.
Meanwhile, Vietnam who won all their four round robin matches, edged Thailand who had only two wins, for the women’s team title while Indonesia took third place.
In the Division Two category, Malaysia C who beat Singapore, Brunei and India, clinched the title while India finished as runners-up. — Bernama
