KUALA TERENGGANU: Malaysia failed to advance into the final of the men’s team event after suffering a humiliating 0-2 defeat to Indonesia in the semi-finals of the Sepak Takraw World Cup at Stadium Negeri here yesterday.
Malaysia, who were expected to meet Thailand in the final, will now have only a runners-up medal to show from hosting the World Cup, as Malaysia A had finished runners-up in the men’s Inter-regu which was won by Thailand on Saturday.
For Indonesia who meet Thailand in the final, it was their second victory as they had also managed a similar victory during the Kings Cup in Bangkok last year. The loss also dealt a severe blow to Malaysia’s aspiration of winning at least a gold medal at the Laos SEA Games in December.
Meanwhile, Malaysian coach Haris Abd Rahman said the players who lacked experience buckled under mounting pressure in such a big tournament.
“Once the first regu lost, the morale of the second regu was down,” he said. — Bernama
