Fire leaves three families in Mongkos homeless

SERIAN: Three families in Kampung Mentu Tapuh in Mongkos near here lost their houses in a fire on Saturday. But there was no report of any casualty, Serian MP Datuk Richard Riot said yesterday.

Riot said the fire which started around 6.30pm in one of the houses also destroyed the house of the village headman Austin Minin. He said even though he had been told by the villagers about the cause of the fire, it would be best the matter was left to the Fire and Rescue Department to investigate.

The MP also said the loss in the blaze had not been ascertained yet. Riot said during the fire, there was also an explosion.

“I sympathise with the affected families as the fire had ruined their Gawai Eve and Gawai celebration. “I am glad that due to the team effort and team spirit of the villagers and the Fire and Rescue Department personnel, the fire was stopped from spreading further,” he said.

Riot, who is also Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) central working committee member, said he was touched when community leader Pemanca H K Choo went to provide assistance to the affected families. He hoped more people would come forward to assist the victims in the spirit of Gawai and unity.

Kampung Mentu Tapuh is about 45-minutes’ drive from here, he said, encouraging the people, especially the town folk to visit and share the joy of Gawai with the villagers.
