KOTA KINABALU: The People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) has set one million members as their target nationwide by the end of next year, said Rela Sabah director Brig Gen Samsuddin Lawe yesterday.
He expressed confidence that the target is achievable through its on-going aggressive membership drive across the country.
“We plan to set up Rela units in every housing estate to ensure the safety of residents. It is one way of increasing our members and am confident that the one million membership target is achievable through this approach,” said Samsuddin at the sixth anniversary celebration of Rela Dah Yeh Villa in Luyang here.
Also present were Likas assemblyman Datuk Liew Teck Chan, KK city Rela officer Major Mohd Salleh Daud, KK city Rela assistant officer Major Lesziana Telling and community leader Capt David Liew Yun Min.
Meanwhile, Teck Chan said that Rela Luyang has become one of the most active and respected voluntary bodies in the state.
He said it started with only one platoon headed by Major David Liew, and the Rela in Luyang now has a total of 17 platoons.
“The Rela Luyang has complemented the efforts of enforcement bodies in combating crimes, illegal immigrants and in providing security at various community programmes and activities as well as taking part in social programmes such as blood donation campaign,” Teck Chan added.
