Good start by national sailors Down Under

LANGKAWI: Elite national sailor Kharulnizam Mohd Afendy remained within striking distance after the completion of two races in the Laser Radial Open category of the ongoing Australian National Sailing Championships in Adelaide yesterday.

Malaysian Yachting Association (MYA) general manager Mohd Afendy Abdullah in an e-mail to Bernama said though wind and sea conditions were not favourable (between 12 to 15 knots), Kharulnizam finished the day in fourth position while another elite sailor Mohd Romzi Muhamad remained in ninth position.

Though Kharulnizam was lying in fourth position in the open category, the 16- year-old leads the age group category after the completion of two races from the scheduled 12.

In the Laser Standard category, Harrithammry Nassution and Nik Ashraf Nik Azizan were in 14th and 29th positions respectively.

Back-up national sailors Khairunisa Mohd Afendy and Norashikin Mohamad Sayed who are taking part in the International 420 category are also leading in their age group category.

Sailors from countries like France, Singapore, New Zealand and Australia are also taking part in the championships. — Bernama
