Visitors vault into lead at Semenanjung vs Borneo lawn bowls

KUCHING: Semenanjung took the lead on the first day of the 4th Borneo vs Semenanjung lawn bowls tournament at Lawn Bowls Green here yesterday.

The team, comprising 16 members from the national Cemerlang Squad, aged 18 years and below, were leading Borneo 48-24 as at 5pm in the two-team tournament.

Borneo are represented by Sarawaka��s Sukma Shadow Team members Mohd Mustaffa Yakub, Mohd Nurarnizam Johari, Syed Iqmalludina Wan Azman, Yusof Amminuddin, Azreen Hadari, Bessy Joseph, Nor Asmah Hassan and Nor Syamiezan Jamel.

Other members of the squad are Ghazali Omar, Muhd Syazwan Sapar, Nurfarhana Roziman, Nur Atiqah Hassan from Labuan, and Muhammad Afiq Tan, Muhammad Firdaus Sulaiman, Fatin Aqilah Amran and Nur Shafiqa Johana Tan from Sabah.

The Semenanjung boys team comprise Abdul Syafiq Alif Abdul Rahman, Ahmad Faisal Walid, Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple, Mohd Raziqin Rostam, Muhammad Hafiz Zahari, Muhammad Hakim Md Jais, Muhammad Najah Yazid, Muhammad Rizal Zakaria.

The girls are Ainur Khairani Abdul Razak, Noorazlinda Zakaria, Nor Dalila Azmi, Nur Adibah Nabihah Rozali, Nur Atika Nabilla Rozali, Nur Asmida Rosli, Nur Ifeza Syariah Zainal and Syafiqa Haidar Afif Abdul Rahman.

All the players are contesting in eight disciplines a�� singles, pairs, triples, fours, mixed singles, mixed pairs, mixed triples and mixed fours.

Players will compete in two sets each to earn two points for themselves and the team.

The competition, jointly organised by Malaysian Lawn Bowls Association (Malba) and Sarawak Lawn Bowls Association (Salba), was opened by Malba secretary general Ramble Dollan Rice-Oxley.

It ends tomorrow.

Players will be given rankings from one to 16 after the competition while the top three from Borneo will get to play in the Inter-club Open Championships at Bayuemas Stadium, Klang, Selangor, from November 12-15.

Among the objectives of the tournament are to test the skills of the national Cemerlang Squad and Sukma players from Sarawak, Sabah and Labuan, and develop the sport in Sarawak, Labuan and Sabah in terms of management, technical aspects, coaching and players.

It is also aimed at strengthening the administration and management of Salba in organising international events as well as enhancing ties between Borneo and Semenanjung Malaysia.

Also present at the event was Salba president Awang Mahyan Awang Mohamed.
