SEMPORNA: The body of a teenage schoolboy who drowned when a ferry he was travelling in, sank in Sungai Manis, Lihak-Lihak near here on Saturday, was recovered yesterday morning.
A search and rescue (SAR) team found 14-year-old Mohd Annawawi Nunhati’s body about 8. 30am, about three kilometres ffrom where he was reported to have disappeared.
District police chief Deputy Superintendent Mohd Azim Abdullah said the remains of the form two pupil was sent to the Semporna Hospital where they were claimed by his next-of-kin for burial.
He said the SAR team comprised the Royal Malaysian Navy, Marine Operations Team and Fire and Rescue Department.
The body of Mohd Annawawi’s 44-year-old mother — who was the other victim in the tragedy — was found at 11. 45am yesterday.
Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nasir Tun Sakaran, who visited the scene of the tragedy, expressed condolences to the bereaved family.
He cautioned those who used ferries as their mode of transport to be mindful of its capacity to avoid a recurrence of the tragedy.
He said the state government would restore communication with a new ferry, adding that it was a temporary alternative while waiting for the RM7 million concrete bridge to be completed in the middle of next year. — Bernama
